Short-term aquatic toxicity testing was conducted in aquatic fish (Salmo gairdneri) and aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna), in addition to an algal growth inhibition assay (Desmodesmus subspicatus) and an activated sludge respiration inhibition assay. The lowest aquatic L(E)C50was observed in Desmodesmus subspicatus, (EC50= 68.6 mg/L). Toxic effects observed in daphnids and algae at the highest dose level in each study (100 mg/L) were likely attributed to pH effects: the pH in the test concentrations of 100 mg/L for both algae and daphnids was shown to be outside the recommended pH range of 6-9; and an absence of toxic effects was observed in each study at a pH-neutralised test concentration of 100 mg/L. Long-term testing in fish and invertebrates was not conducted; the substance is not poorly soluble in water, and the results of the chemical safety assessment showed that the risk characterization ratios for surface water are all below one. Therefore, long-term aquatic toxicity testing was not indicated.
