In a test to investigate the biodegradation in water test according to OECD 310 and GLP (Infracor Chemistry Services, 2007) activated sludge was exposed to 20 mg/l of [3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]urea over 28 days. The degradation was calculated from the CO2evolution during the test period. The tested batch of [3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]urea contains 50 % methanol, which would biodegrade rapidly and [3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]urea hydrolyses in contact with water to the corresponding 3-Ureidopropylsilanetriol and ethanol. After 28 days, a mean degradation rate of 86% was found.The silanol hydrolysis product,3-Ureidopropylsilanetriol, is not expected to biodegrade to any significant extent.The high degradation rate could be explained with the readily biodegradability of methanol and ethanol in the test media.
