Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

Lysozyme is readily biodegradable; all enzyme classes are readily biodegradable. Degradation products are primarily peptides and amino acids, then carbon dioxide and water which cause no harm to nature.

The bioconcentration potential of enzymes, which are macromolecules subject to metabolism in any living organism, can be neglected. In particular, due to the high molecular weight of 20 kD - 80 kD, the hydrophilic properties (high water solubility, negative partition coefficient) and immediate accessibility to metabolic processes.

No specific information exists concerning the toxicity of lysozyme, however considering that Lysozyme is naturally occurring in many organisms, such as viruses, bacteria, plants, insects, birds, reptiles and mammals, it is expected to be non-toxic for aquatic and terrestrial life.

Furthermore Lysozyme is not classified either as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction, or as specific target organ toxicity after repeated exposure.
