PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF TEST SOLUTION (especially for difficult test substances)
- Method: The test substance was ground, and added to a weighed beaker. The test substance was then added to 13 L of dilution water. The solution was then mixed for 48 hrs, and then allowed to settle for 5 hrs.
- Evidence of undissolved material (e.g. precipitate, surface film, etc.): Precipitate was present in the dilution solution. Great care was taken when decanting the dilution water into the test chamber to avoid transferring precipitate. No evidence of precipitate was seen in the test chambers.

Executive summary:

The acute toxicity of sucrose esters to fish was determined in an OECD Guideline 203 study. Groups of seven fish were exposed to 0 or 100 mg/L of sucrose esters for 96 hrs. Due to the complex nature of the test substance, results were reported as water accomodated fraction (WAF). No fish in the test or control groups died or showed abnormal behaviour. The 96-hr LL50 is therefore >100 mg/L (WAF).

One experimental study is available investigating the toxicity of the test item to the freshwater fish Pimephales promelas. The study was performed according to OECD 203 (GLP) under static conditions. Due to the low water solubility the test solutions were prepared as Water Accommodated Fractions (WAF) and the loading rate of 100 mg/L (nominal) was tested. The WAF was prepared by adding an appropriate amount of test item to test medium followed by mixing for 48 h and a settling time of 5 h. Since undissolved particles were present in the solution it was carefully decanted to the exposure vessels in order to avoid undissolved material in the test vessels. No evidence of precipitate was seen in the test chambers. After exposure of 96 h no mortality was recorded resulting in a LL50 (96 h) of > 100 mg/L based on the nominal loading rate.
