Description of key information

The biodegradation of cyclododecane was investigated in several tests on ready biodegradability and at polluted sites with different bacterial strains. The test on biodegradation were performed by Hüls AG under different testing conditions (BODIS test (ISO 10708), closed bottle test (OECD 301D) and modified Sturm test (EU C.5.)) and little to no degradation was observed (maximum 18% in 28 days in the BODIS test).
When using isolated strains from polluted sites, it was shown that two of five strains were able to grow with cyclododedane as the sole carbon source. A mixed microorganisms population from the same site degraded 30% of cyclododecane after 8 days at 30°C. Rhodococcus ruber CD4 was also able to use cyclododecane as the sole carbon source.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed

Additional information

Based on the available ready biodegradability test results, cyclododecane is considered not readily biodegradable. Very slow or no degradation at all was observed in the tests. Cyclododecane has been shown to be degraded by adapted inocula with mixed microbial population and by specific strains.
