Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Research has been performed on a number of chromium salts.

Chromium occurs naturally in water and is not considered to be accumulative. Algae appear to be the most sensitive organism for short term exposure (significant inhibition at 0.6 mg/l), but fish NOEC reported to be 0.15 mg/l for chronic exposure.

The UK Environment Agency has proposed a maximum limit and this is used to determine the PNEC Aquatic of 47 µg/l Cr 3+

Additional information

Classification has been based on the non-accumulative nature of the substance and uses simle maths based on the molecular weight of the propionate salt to extrapolate concentrations from the toxicity of the Cr3+ ions.

With a molecular weight of the following figures have been used for classification.

Acute fish toxicity : calculated to be > 100 mg/l.

Chronic fish toxicity : calculated ca 0.78 mg/l

Acute Daphnia : calculated 90 mg/l

Daphnia reproduction : calculated 3.6 mg/l

Algal inhibition : calculated 1.6 mg/l
