Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Magnesium methanolate hydrolysis into methanol and magnesium hydroxide.

The half life of magnesium methanolate was determined to be T1/2 < 1 min (Hydrolysis as a Function of pH). In all experiments the hydrolysis of magnesium methanolate in buffer solutions (pH4, pH7, pH9) takes place immediately. Hydrolysis rates of >= 90% within 1 minute reaction time are observed for all samples.

The hydrolysis product methanol is degraded in the atmosphere by photochemical, hydroxyl-radical dependent reactions, with a rate constant of 0.932 x 10^-12cm³/molecule*sec (Atkinson, 1989).A half-life in thetroposphere of about 17 – 18 days can be estimated. Methanol is thus slowely degraded by photochemical processes.Methanol is completely miscible in water (water solubility > 1000g/l at 20°C) but without hydrolysable functional groups chemically stable in water.

The hydrolysis product meagnesium hydroxide is poorly soluble (water solubility ca. 178 mg/l at 20°C) and chemically stable in water.
