Description of key information

Based on ample data collected from studies with alkyl lactates and fatty alcohols, the 96h-LC50 for freshwater fish is estimated at 0.28 mg/L. Based on GLP studies according to OECD guidelines, the 48h-EC50 for Daphnia magna is 0.0 64 mg/L and the ErC50 for Algae at > 1.8 mg/L. Estimated chronic exposure of Daphnia magna to the combined alkyl lactates resulted in a values of 0.023 mg/L. However, as both the C12 -15 alcohols and lactate esters are readily biodegradable, prolonged environmental exposure of aquatic organisms is considered as less relevant. Toxicity to microorganisms appeared to exceed a loading of 40 mg/L, which was used in a biodegradation test. Microbial activity was not inhibited and the constituents of propanoic acid, 2-hydroxy-, C12-15-alkyl esters were readily biodegradable.
