Additional information

Since no experimental studies investigating the short-term toxicity of 3,5,5 trimethylhexanoic acid, mixed esters with dipentaerythritol (CAS 84418-63-3, UVCB) to fish are available for this endpoint, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across to the structurally related source substance 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid hexaester with dipentaerythritol (CAS 84418-63-3, mono) was conducted. This read-across is justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID section 6.1) and within the analogue justification in IUCLID section 13. Both substances consist of the same alcohol component (dipentaerythritol) and an equal fatty acid chain length (C9iso, respectively) but with different degrees of esterifications.

The GLP study with 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid hexaester with dipentaerythritol (CAS 84418-63-3) was conducted under semi-static conditions equivalent to OECD guideline 203 with the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Comber, 1993).The test substance was directly added to the test vessel to prepare a test solution of nominal 1000 mg/L (limit test). No effects were observed after an exposure of 96 h resulting in a LC50 > 1000 mg/L.

Based on the available results from this structurally related read-across substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which is characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded that 3,5,5 trimethylhexanoic acid, mixed esters with dipentaerythritol (CAS 84418-63-3) will not exhibit short-term effects on fish up to the limit of water solubility.
