Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Three studies that looked at potential adverse effects of iron on aquatic plants were identified (Sinha et al (1994), Van der Welle et al (2007), Bosnir et al (2013)) , but none of these studies are considered reliable for various reasons:

1) The conducted experiments were non-standard toxicity tests

2) Iron concentration of test solutions was above the limiting solubility concentration for iron.

3) Total iron concentrations are reported., and no iron speciation was performed.

4) Some tests were performed under anaerobic water saturated conditions which are not considered relevant

5) No information on physicochemical properties of the test medium during the test was provided.

Van der Welle et al (2007) also reported that there are only positive effects on growth and photosynthesis at increasing Fe concentrations which indicate a lack of Fe in control medium
