Description of key information

Eucalyptus oil is a natural complex substance. It is a mixture of several components, but three of them represent 85% of that mixture. Log Kow of each of these three components were determined. Without available experimental BCF studies, Eucalyptus oil BCF value was determined regarding the highest log Kow value of these components. The highest log Kow value is for alpha-pinene (log Kow at 4.42), therefore it was assumed that BCF of alpha-pinene would be conservative enough for the mixture, which is 852.9 L/kg wet-wt. This value is a geometric mean between three calculation approaches: regression-based estimate BCFBAF v3.01,Arnot-Gobas upper trophic including biotransformation BCFBAF v3.01 andTGD part. II, eq. (74).

Additional information

Summary of log Kow of Eucalyptus oil main constituents (QSAR values)

Constituent Log Kow
Alpha-pinene 4.42
1,8-cineol 2.84
(d,l)-limonene 4.35

Log Kow of Alpha pinene, 1,8 -cineol and (d,l)-limonene were estimated. Two of these constituents have a log kow > 3 and thus present a potential to bioaccumulate.

A conservative approach was chosen to calculate BCF values of Eucalyptus oil by using alpha-pinene log Kow as it is the highest value.
