Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
read-across based on grouping of substances (category approach)
Adequacy of study:
key study
Justification for type of information:
READ ACROSS CATEGORY APPROACH
A category group was formed with dipotassium peroxodisulphate (KPS), disodium peroxodisulphate (SPS) and diammonium peroxodisulphate (APS). Several physico-chemical, fate, ecotoxicological and toxicological endpoints were assessed using the category approach. Please refer to the read across justification in chapter 13 for further information.
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
read-across source
Key result
Test procedure:
burning time (test type not further specified)
Remarks on result:
other: not flammable
Endpoint:
flammable gases
Data waiving:
study technically not feasible
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid
Endpoint:
pyrophoric liquids
Data waiving:
study technically not feasible
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
other:
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water

Description of key information

Dipotassium persulfate was not tested for flammability properties. A read across approach was applied from the category member diammonium persulfate, as this substance shows similar physicochemical properties. Additionally, no flammability in contact with water and no pyrophoric abilities were expected. Thus, the latter two studies were waived.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Dipotassium persulfate was not tested for flammability properties. A read across approach was applied to assess flammability using data from the category member diammonium persulfate (Giseler, Dr.; Degussa, Study No. 89/02646, 1989) as this substance shows similar physicochemical properties. As diammonium persulfate was determined not highly flammable (see: Key-001-Flammability-Degussa-1989), dipotassium persulfate was considered not highly flammable as well.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Assessment of flammability properties for dipotassium persulfate was based on a read across approach from the category member diammonium persulfate, as this substance shows similar physicochemical properties.

Based on the results obtained from the read across approach (non flammable, Key-001) and taking into account the provisions laid down in Regulation 1272/2008/EC (CLP), as amended for the fifteenth time in Regulation (EU) 2020/1182, dipotassium persulfate was not considered a flammable solid.
