After evaporation or exposure to the air, the product and its hydrolysis product will be rapidly degraded by photochemical processes.

Parent compound: Based on an estimated OH radical rate constant of 24.2431E-12 cm³/(molecule*sec), the half-life of stearoyl chloride was calculated to be 15.9 h (test conditions: sensitiser for indirect photolysis: OH; 0.5 E06 OH/cm³, 24-h day) (BASF SE, 2009).This estimation refers to dry air. In mist, rain, droplets and aerosols hydrolysis will be the major fate process in air due to the short half-life in aqueous solutions.

Hydrolysis product stearic acid: Based on an estimated OH radical rate constant of 22.4804E-12 cm³/(molecule*sec), the half-life of stearic acid was calculated to be 17.1 h (test conditions: 0.5 E06 OH/cm³, 24 -h day) (BASF SE, 2009).
