Additional information

The objective of the study was to determine the 48-hour acute toxicity of TOFA_TETA_PAA_BADGE_CGE_Adduct to the freshwater planktonic crustacean, Daphnia magna. The study was conducted in accordance with the requirements of OECD Chemicals Testing Guideline No. 202 Daphnia sp. Acute Immobilisation Test (adopted April 13 2004).

Based on the results of a range-finding test, the definitive test was conducted at nominal concentrations of 0.0313, 0.0625, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 mg/L. A control group was also included. The test was conducted under static test conditions.

At the start of the test, five juvenile Daphnia magna were added to each test vessel and then observed at 24 and 48 hours. The Daphnia magna were not fed during the test.

Total Carbon (TC) analysis of the test media samples was conducted in the range-finding and definitive tests at 0 (fresh media) and 48 hours (old media). TC analysis showed that it was not possible to detect TC at concentrations ≤ 10 mg/L. Due to toxicity observed during the range-finding test it was necessary to test below the TC limit of detection. The definitive test concentrations were prepared by direct dilution from the 100 mg/L stock which was analysed for TC.

TC analysis during the range-finding test showed that the 100 mg/L concentration showed concentrations of carbon in the media at 0 and 48 hours to be 44.3 and 66.6 mg/L, respectively.

TC analysis during the definitive test showed that the 100 mg/L test concentration showed concentrations of carbon in the media at 0 and 48 hours to be 53 and 45.6 mg/L, respectively.

The ECx values and the corresponding NOEC and LOEC values in terms of nominal concentrations are presented in table presented below.

After 48hours, the concentration at which no statistically significant dose related immobility occurred was 0.5 mg/L and therefore the NOEC was considered to be 0.5 mg/L. After 48 hours, 100% immobility was recorded at the highest treatment level tested of 1.0 mg/L.

In terms of nominal concentrations the 48-hour EC50value was determined to be 0.705 mg/L.

The validity criteria for control immobility (≤10%) and dissolved oxygen (>60% ASV) were both satisfied and the test is therefore considered valid.

It is concluded that TOFA_TETA_PAA_BADGE_CGE_Adduct was considered toxic to Daphnia magna at nominal concentrations greater than 0.5 mg/L under the conditions of this test.
