Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

Annex XIII of the REACH Regulation (1907/2006) lays down the criteria for the identification of persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic substances (PBT substances), as well as the information that must be considered for the purpose of assessing the P, B, and T properties of the substance. The criteria require that all available information is to be used, employing a weight-of-evidence approach. Substances must meet all three criteria to be considered PBT.

The substance (dodecylbenzene sulfonic acids (CAS# 27176-87-0)) is from the category of LAB Sulfonic Acids, which includes the following three chemicals:

Benzene sulfonic acid, C10-16 alkyl derivatives (CAS# 68584-22-5),

Benzene sulfonic acid, dodecyl (CAS# 27176-87-0), and,

Benzene sulfonic acid, tridecyl (CAS# 25496-01-9).

Persistence Assessment:

Dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid was found to be readily biodegradable in the OECD 301B test. The result is that it was achieved 69% mineralization after 28 days. This test was carried out according to the guidelines of OECD Guide-line 301 B "Ready Biodegradability: Modified Sturm Test (CO2 evolution)".

Data of following studies are demonstrating rapid biodegradation of C12-LAS (including Na-LAS) under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.

Therefore, Dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid is not persistent.

Bioaccumulation Assessment:

An estimated BCF is 70.79 by BCFWIN Modelbased on log Kow =4.78(US EPA, 2011). Bioconcentrations of total C12-LAS in fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), andamphipod (Hyalella azteca) were investigated during 32 days. At 32 days, total C12-LAS bioconcentration factors (BCFs) for the three species ranged from 36 to 119 (Versteeg and Rawlings, 2003).These experimental and estimated BCF values suggest that dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid has a low potential for bioaccumulation. Therefore, dodecylbenzenesulfonic acidis not bioaccumulative.

Toxicity Assessment:

None of the long-term NOECs for marine or freshwater organisms are 0.01 mg /L. Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid is not classified as carcinogenic (Category 1 or 2), mutagenic (Category 1 or 2), or toxic for reproduction (Category 1, 2 or 3). There is no evidence of chronic toxicity, as identified by the classifications: T, R48, or Xn, R48 according to Directive 67/548/EEC. Therefore Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid does not meet the PBT criteria for toxicity.

Summary and overall Conclusions on PBT or vPvB:

Properties Based on the data collected and the discussion above, of Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid does not meet the criteria for either PBT or VPvBas it is readily biodegraded in the environment, has a very low bioaccumulation potential, low chronic aquatic toxicity and is not classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction or for chronic toxicity.
