Description of key information

The acute toxicity of SABoTBA to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) has been assessed, under semi-static conditions.
No mortality occurred during the 96 hour test; therefore, the 96 hour LC50 could not be calculated but was considered under the conditions of this study to be greater than 24.5 mg/L.
The 96 hour ‘no-observed effect concentration’ (NOEC) is considered to be 10.5 mg/L.

Additional information

A study was performed to assess the acute toxicity of SABoTBA to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) under semi-static conditions with daily renewal of the media.

The study was conducted in accordance with EC Methods for Determination of Ecotoxicity, Annex to Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 (O.J. No. L142/446, 2008) Part C, Method 1 “Acute Toxicity For Fish” and the OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals No. 203 “Fish, Acute Toxicity Test” (1992).

Groups of seven juvenile fish were exposed to SABoTBA, dispersed in water at nominal concentrations of 1.17, 2.58, 5.68, 12.5 and 27.5mg/L. The test media were prepared by direct addition of the test substance to waterfor the 27.5 mg/L preparation and by dilution of this high concentration (aliquots of 850 mL, 1880 mL, 4.13 L and 9.09L) as appropriate.

At all concentrations, the intended exposure levels of SABoTBA were achieved between 70 to 98% of their nominal values. The slightly low concentrations are considered to have resulted from a slightly lower solubility at the lower temperature for an acute fish study when compared with the physiochemical properties study (20ºC with approx. 15ºC for this fish study). The concentrations were maintained during the test (between79 to 136% of their starting values). Based on a geometric mean, overall mean measured levels were 0.950, 2.19, 4.65, 10.5 and 24.5mg/L and these values have been used in the determination of study end-points.

Observations of the fish were made after approximately 2, 4, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours of exposure.

No mortality occurred during the 96 hour test, therefore the 96 hour LC50was greater than 24.5 mg/L under the conditions of this study.

The ‘no-observed effect concentration’ (NOEC) was 10.5 mg/L as treatment-related effects(loss of body colour, loss of co-ordination and/or spiral swimming)were exhibited at measured concentrations 24.5 mg/L at 24 hours.
