Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Data are available for the short-term toxicity of hydrocarbons, C9-C12, n-alkanes, isoalkanes < 2% aromatics to invertebrates and to algae. The results of these studies are similar to the results seen in short-term algal and invertebrate studies on the surrogate substance, hydrocarbons, C9-C11, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, <2% aromatics, supporting the read-across of data for other ecotoxicological endpoints.

Conclusion on classification

Based on measured data, hydrocarbons, C9-C12, n-alkanes, isoalkanes < 2% aromatics, is not classified for the environment because it does not demonstrate invertebrate toxicity at loadings up to 180 mg/L, and alga toxicity at loadings up to 391 mg/L. Based on read-across data, it does not exhibit toxicity to fish at loadings up to 1000 mg/L. In addition, it is also readily biodegradable and the log Kow balue is >4 (based on read-across data). Measured algal 72-hour NOELR values are >1 mg/L and there is evidence from the surrogate substance of rapid degradation in the environment based on a high extent of biodegradation demonstrated in soil.
