Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Charcoal composition as a UVCB substance varies but the major constituent is elemental carbon. Elemental carbon is insoluble in water and many common solvents. Other lower level constituents such as ash (which is mineral matter, such as clay and inorganic oxides) and tarry residues not fully driven-off in the process of carbonisation are also insoluble. No actual value for solubility can be assigned to charcoal as a UVCB substance although it is assessed to be <1mg/l

Additional information

There may be impurities present that do have solubility water.

Any impurities identified by individual registrants will need to be assessed for potential risk to the aquatic environment
