Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Guideline:
EU Method A.3 (Relative Density)
Version / remarks:
EC 440/2008 of May 30, 2008
Deviations:
no
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The density is determined by measuring the volume of a known mass of the test substance by means of a gas displacement pycnometer. In gas pycnometric density measurements, the volume determined excludes the volume occupied by open pores; however, it includes the volume occupied by sealed pores or pores inaccessible to the gas if present.
The volume occupied by the test substance is determined from the exactly known volumes of the empty test chamber and expansion chamber, determined by calibration, and the pressure change of an inert gas (usually helium) in the test chamber, that results when the connection to the expansion chamber is opened. For the calculation of the density the mass of the test substance is measured with an analytical balance.
