Description of key information

One study dealt with germination of seeds of different varieties of corn, wheat and cotton after fumigation with CS2 at different concentrations. At the lowest tested concentration of 200 mL/m3 the germination of wheat was affected; the NOEC for wheat was < 200 mL/m3. The lowest concentration at which the germination of corn was not affected was 200 mL/m3; the NOEC for corn was 200 mL/m3 (633 mg/m3). At the highest concentration tested (400 mL/m3) cotton was not affected. Therefore, the NOEC for cotton was ≥ 400 mL/m3 (1267 mg/m3).

In another study bush bean plants were exposed to CS2 (6 – 82 µmol/m3 air) in open gas exchange chambers. CS2 gas did not affect the photosynthesis and transpiration of bush bean plants at concentrations up to and including 82 µmol/m3 in air upon exposure for 6 h. Moreover, 3 days after exposure no foliar necrosis was observed at this concentration. The NOEC for bush bean plants was ≥ 82 µmol/m3 (6.2 mg/m3).

In the two described toxicity studies plants were exposed to CS2in the form of gas. Plants cannot be exposed via the soil because CS2given to soil will evaporate before it can affect the plants. At the (low) concentrations which are to be expected in air CS2has no effects on plants.
