Anhydrous perchloric acid is a colorless liquid, very hygroscopic and highly soluble in water.

It is a non combustible substance, but it is unstable and decomposes explosively at ordinary temperatures or in contact with many organic compounds. Therefore, it is manufactured and used in aqueous solution with a maximum concentration of 70% which is stable at ambient temperature, but is a strong oxidising substance.
