Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

REPORTING FORMAT FOR THE ANALOGUE APPROACH

1. HYPOTHESIS FOR THE ANALOGUE APPROACH
This read-across is based on the hypothesis that source and target substance have similar oxidising properties because they share structural similarities with common functional groups: the organic moiety is identical - Ethyltriphenylphosphonium-ion -, the source substance has bromide as counter ion, the target substance iodide.

2. SOURCE AND TARGET CHEMICAL(S) (INCLUDING INFORMATION ON PURITY AND IMPURITIES)

Source Target
Name Ethyltriphenylfosfonium bromide Ethyltriphenylphosphonium iodide
CAS 1530-32-1 4736-60-1
EC 216-223-3 225-245-2
Common functional group Ethyltriphenylphosphonium ion Ethyltriphenylphosphonium ion
Deviating functional group counter ion bromide counter ion iodide
Purity Please refer to section ´Confidential details in general comparable to source substance
on test material´ of the respective source substance ID.

3. ANALOGUE APPROACH JUSTIFICATION
This read accross study is included as supporting study to the waiver on oxidising properties of Ethyltriphenylphosphonium iodide to underline that the organic moiety has no oxidising properties. As source and target do have an identical organic moiety, this read across is justified.
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
read-across source
Remarks on result:
other: no oxidising properties based on experimental data on structural analogue
Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met

Description of key information

no oxidizing properties

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
non oxidising

Additional information

There are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with oxidising properties. The negatively charged counterion iodide has no oxidising properties as it is incapable to incorporate further electrons. Missing oxidising properties of the organic moiety was confirmed in a GLP study according to EU Method A.17 (December, 29 1992) with the structural analogue Ethyltriphenylfosfonium bromide.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Ethyltriphenylphosphonium iodide has no oxidizing properties based on structural considerations and experimental result on structural analogue Ethyltriphenylfosfonium bromide.

According to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) of the United Nations, Ethyltriphenylphosphonium iodide does not have to be classified for oxidising properties. According to the criteria of REGULATION (EC) No 1272/2008, Ethyltriphenylphosphonium iodide does not have to be classified and has no obligatory labelling requirement for oxidising properties.
