Conclusion on classification

Acute LC50/EC50 values for the three trophic levels are > 1 mg/l (and the 72h NOEC for algae is 1.6 mg/l).

Persistence of the substance in the aquatic environment is not evident, due to:

1. its hydrolytic instability (t1/2=12h at 20.4C) combined with a high water solubility (>1g/ml);

2. the readily biodegradability of its hydrolysis products allantoin and formaldehyde;

3. predicted rapid degradation in sewage treatment plants based on simulation;

4. relatively low potential for bioaccumulation or adsorption (log Kow<0.9).

This means that the substance holds no potential for either acute or chronic hazard for aquatic organisms and thus should not be classified according to the terms of Regulation 1272/2008 (as amended).
