Additional information

Skin irritation:

In animal experiments the compound was applied to rabbits to the inner part of the ear and fixed with adhesive bandage for a period of 1 to 8 hours. In all experiments redness or redness and eschar formation and/or swelling of the treated skin areas was reported.

In a human experiment skin irritation was tested in volunteers. A cotton swab saturated with TDM was applied on the forearms of the subjects and fixed under a protective dressing. 2 hours after the application of the test substance, a marked reddening of the skin was observed at the exposure site. 4 hours after the application, the redness was still considerably stronger and a swelling was observed.

Eye irritation:

In one experiment a pronounced conjunctivitis was observed after installation of a drop of the concentrated test substance into the conjunctival sac of one rabbit eye.

In another experiment 100 µL of the test substance was instilled in the conjunctival sac of 2 rabbits. About 1 hour after administration of the test substance, a moderate redness and a slight swelling of the conjunctiva were observed. 4 hours after the application only a slight reddening of the conjunctiva was present. No effects were observed 2 days after the application.

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: irritating

Effects on eye irritation: irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

There are no studies according to actual guidelines available. Based on the available experimental data the following classification is proposed without any further in vivo testing due to animal welfare reasons: TDM is irritating to the skin but not corrosive after application to the skin of rabbits and humans (DSD: R38; GHS: skin cat 2). Redness and swelling is reported after application to the eye; all effects are reversible after 2 days (DSD: R36; GHS: eye cat 2).
