Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Administrative data

First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Seek medical attention.

Emergency measure - Eyes: Immediately flush eyes for fifteen minutes with water. If

irritation continues, seek medical attention.

Emergency measure - Skin: Remove contaminated clothing and wash skin with soap and

water. If irritation and/or allergic reaction develops, seek

medical advice.

Emergency measure - Ingestion: Seek medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: For small fires, use carbon dioxide or dry chemical. For

large fires, use water spray or alcohol-type aqueous

film-forming foam (AFFF)

Product arising from burning: Carbon monoxide, phenol and acetic acid.

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: Fire-fighters should wear self-contained breathing apparatus

(SCBA) and complete personal protective equipment when

exposed to products of combustion.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Protective clothing and respirator should be worn. Do not

allow eye or skin contact. Do not breathe vapour. Eliminate

ignition sources. Place leaking containers in

well-ventilated area. Contact regulatory agencies to

determine acceptable clean-up levels. Absorbed spilled

liquids, collect and place in suitable container for

disposal. The spill area should then be washed and

ventilated. Consult the Environment Agency.

Handling and storage

Handling: Handle with extreme caution. Do not get in eyes on skin or

on clothing. Do not breathe vapour or mist. Wear suitable

chemical resistant gloves. Gloves should be changed

periodically as permeation time was found to be about 90

minutes with some nitrile gloves. Utilise protective

equipment to minimise all exposure. Handle compound in a

laboratory fume hood whenever possible. When transferring,

follow proper grounding procedures. Wash thoroughly with

soap and water after handling. Work clothes should be

laundered daily.

Use a NIOSH-approved full-facepiece respirator with

canisters or cartridges specifically approved for organic

vapours/acid gases.

Storage: Refrigeration is recommended for storage (5-10°C). Keep away

from heat, sparks and flames.

Protect from light and moisture.

Keep in original tightly closed containers when not in use.

Use with adequate ventilation.

Do not enter storage area that is not adequately ventilated.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: 55 gallon steel composite drums or drums made of HDPE.

Recommend storage temperatures are between 5°C and 10°C.

Remarks:
Transport code: UN 3082
Transport: 4-ASM is typically shipped in refrigerated trailers or
insulated tank trucks (in the U.S). Since only 55 gallon
drums of the material will be shipped to EU countries,
refrigerated trailers are the preferred transport vehicles.

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: CHEMICAL STABILITY:- Chemically stable, will polymerize

rapidly and exothermically in the presence of free-radical

initiators.

INCOMPATIBLE MATERIALS AND CONDITIONS TO AVOID:-

Oxidising agents, free radical initiators, iron, copper,

strong aqueous and non-aqueous acids and bases and avoid

prolonged storage at elevated temperatures.

HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION:-

Will not occur at ambient temperatures in the presence of

inhibitors.

Chemical reaction with water: Foam or water can cause frothing.

Dust explosion: Not applicable as the substance is a liquid.

Dust explosion determined by test: N

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: This material cannot be recycled.

If sufficient quantity is recovered, it could be melt

crystallised or distilled under vacuum in the presence of

suitable inhibitors. If the material has been mixed with

reactive initiators, it is unlikely that the material can be

recovered.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: Controlled free radical polymerisation will produce

poly(4acetoxystyrene)(PAS). PAS is generally considered

harmless.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not recommended

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Incineration is the preferred method of disposal.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Not recommended.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Not applicable as the substance will not enter the public

domain.
