Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Version / remarks:

Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

Preliminary Screening

- The pile ignited on application of the air-rich Bunsen burner; however the flame failed to propagate combustion and self-extinguished.

- The result of the preliminary screening test obviated the need to perform the main test.

Interpretation of results:
other: No classified in accordance with EU criteria
Conclusions:
Under the conditions of this study, the test material has been determined to be not highly flammable as it did not propagate combustion over the 200 mm of the preliminary screening test in under 4 minutes.
Executive summary:

The flammability of the test material was investigated in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.10, under GLP conditions.

A mould (250 mm long x 20 mm wide x 10 mm high) was loosely filled with test material (tested as received) (previously ground in a pestle and mortar). A non-combustible, non-porous board was placed onto the mould which was then inverted. The mould was removed and an air-rich Bunsen burner flame applied to one end of the pile until ignition occurred; the time taken to propagate 200 mm was recorded.

Under the conditions of this study, the test material has been determined to be not highly flammable as it did not propagate combustion over the 200 mm of the preliminary screening test in under 4 minutes.

Description of key information

Flammability (Solids)

Under the conditions of this study, the test material has been determined to be not highly flammable as it did not propagate combustion over the 200 mm of the preliminary screening test in under 4 minutes.

In accordance with Section 1 of Annex XI of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH), it is considered justified to omit the Flammability (Contact with Water) and Pyrophoric Properties of Solids and Liquids studies, also required under section 7.10 of Annex VII, on the basis that the testing does not appear to be scientifically necessary. Experience of handling the material and the known chemical and physical properties of the substance suggest that it is not pyrophoric and is not flammable in contact with water.

Additional information

Flammability (Solids)

The flammability of the test material was investigated in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.10, under GLP conditions. The study was awarded a reliability score of 1 in accordance with the criteria set forth by Klimisch et al. (1997).

Justification for classification or non-classification

In accordance with the criteria for classification as defined in Annex I, Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, the substance does not require classification with respect to flammability.
