Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

4 Findigs

4.1 Safety Pre-Test

The test substance started to melt to a dark liquid and the molten mass burned with a strong sooting flame leaving no residue on the magnesia groove.

4.2 Preliminary Screening Test

The test substance started to melt and the molten mass burned, at contact with the flame of the burner, with a strong sooting flame. But no further burning was observed when the bumer was removed. No signs of flammability were visible.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test substance 1-Benzyl-3-carbamoyl pyridinium, chloride should be considered as not highly flammable.
Executive summary:

The flammability of the test substance was investigated in accordance with EU Method A.10 "Flammability (Solids)".

To derive safety precautions, a safety pre-test was performed by heating a small amount of the sample on a magnesia groove with a gas burner. According to the guideline, the preliminary screening test was performed: the test substance was filled into a mould (250 mm long with a triangular cross-section of 10 mm inner height and 20 mm width) and subsequently compressed by dropping the mould three times onto a solid surface. Thereafter, an inert plate was placed on top of the mould, the apparatus inverted and the mould removed. The resulting pile was arranged in a right angle to the draught of a fume cupboard. The flame of a Teclu burner was applied to one end of the pile in order to ignite the test substance. Heating was kept for two minutes.

Since no ignition of the test item occurred within two minutes of heating and no signs of flammability were visible, the test substance should be considered as not highly flammable, according to EU Method A.10 ("Flammability (Solids)". Based on the results of the preliminary screening test, the burning rate of the test substance was not determined.

However, as contact to the flame of the Teclu burner resulted in melting of the test item and burning of the molten mass with a strong sooting flame, contact with a flame should be avoided even though no further burning could be observed when the flame was removed.
