Description of key information

The BCF/BAF of the test substance 2 -butyl octanoic acid indicate not a high potential for bioaccumulation in aquatic organism.

Additional information

The low BCF/BAF values of the similar substances n-undecanoic acid, 2 -methyl decanoic acid, 2 -ethyl nonanoic acid, 2 -propyl octanoic acid and 2- butyl heptanoic acid support this approach.

Aliphatic acids play an extremely important role as an energy source, particularly in higher animals and plants, and the absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of aliphatic acids have been well understood for years (Lehninger 1970, Nelson and Cox, 2008). In vertebrate animals, aliphatic acids are rapidly absorbed through the gut and transported throughout the animal body by serum albumin. Aliphatic acids are converted to acyl-CoA derivatives (aliphatic acyl-CoA), transported into cells and mitochondria by specific transport systems and then completely metabolized to acetyl-CoA or other key metabolites by catabolic enzymes that efficiently remove 2-carbon units from the aliphatic acyl-CoA molecule (β-oxidation pathway).
