Additional information

While an oral dosage of 5000 mg/kg bodyweight to rats caused mortality, the oral administration of 2000 mg/kg bodyweight did not cause any signs of toxicity.

A dermal application of 2000 mg/kg bodyweight (1.6 mg/m²) to the abraded skin of rabbits caused weak to moderate signs of irritation.

In good correlation with the corrosive properties of 4-HBA to mucous membranes the inhalative exposure of rats to airborne concentrations of 7910 mg/m³ for 4 hours lead to effects which can be explained by the irritating and perhaps also corrosive action of 4-HBA on the inner surfaces of the respiratory system. The acute inhalative exposure does not cause mortality.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the CLP-regulation (EC) No 1278/2008 4-HBA has not to be classified in the hazard class acute toxicity. See justification above.
