Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:

There is few report on skin sensitisation in the long history of iodide use by human. Additionally based on information from assessment report of WHO, in a human assay, five patients were applied with potassium iodide in concentrations ranging from 5% to 20% in petrolatum, no such effect was observed. Therefore, skin sensitization effect test for iodide can be omitted.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
Five patients were applied with potassium iodide in concentrations ranging from 5% to 20% in petrolatum, no such effect was observed.

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:

Since the granular size of the crystals of potassium iodide is evidently bigger than 100 μm, the VP of potassium iodide is low as well, the inhalation is unlikely exposure route for human. In addition based on long time experience, respiratory sensitization effect test for iodide can be omitted.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
Based on long time experience, respiratory sensitization effect is not likely occurring for iodide.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the properties of potassium iodide, it does not meet classification criteria of skin and respiration sensitisation underunder the Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 nor Directive 67/548/EEC.
