Description of key information

The toxicity of 1-amino-4-chlorobenzene towards the growth of Scenedesmus subspicatus after a test duration of 72 h was investigated (Kuehn und Pattard, 1990) according to DIN 38 412, Part 9. The extinction value of monochromatic radiation at a wave length of 578 nm was used to measure the cell concentration. Growth curves for each tested concetration and control were established followed by the calculation of growth rates for samples showing exponential growth during the test duration. On the basis of the mentioned conditions, an EC50 of 6.3 mg/L was determined.
4-Chlorophenyl isocyanate is know to rapidly hydrolyse forming 1-amino-4-chlorobenzene as only hydrolysis product with a half-live of 7.3 h. With respect to a test duration of 72 h, 4-chlorophenyl isocyanate would be completely degraded and observed effects are rather caused by the hydrolysis product than by the parent substance. Thus, the effect of 1-amino-4-chlorobenzene was chosen to characterize the ecotoxicological potential of 4-chlorophenyl isocyanate towards algae.
