Description of key information

The 3-h EC50 value from the activated sludge respiration inhibition test of 130 mg/L which is equivalent to 53 mg zinc/L and 46 mg fluoride/L based on the molecular weight fractions for zinc and fluoride of 40.7% and 35.4%, respectively.

Additional information

The toxicity of potassium trifluorozincate to microorganisms was determined in a GLP-compliant test according to OECD Guideline 209. In this study the respiration inhibition of microorganisms from activated sludge of a sewage treatment plant treating predominantly domestic sewage was determined after 3 -h exposure to nominal concentrations of 9.5, 30.5, 97.7, 312.5 and 1000 mg/L potassium trifluorozincate. A clear concentration-response relationship was observed from which the 3 -h EC50 value was determined at 130 mg/L (95% C.L.: 113 -148 mg/L).

As potassium trifluorozincate in water rapidly dissociates into its various ions, it is these ions that are expected to be present in the environment and which will therefore be assessed. Therefore, effect values for potassium trifluorozincate are also expressed as zinc and fluoride based on their respective molecular weight fractions (potassium is not assessed because of its environmental abundance and low toxicity). This leads to 3 -h EC50 values of 53 mg zinc/L and 46 mg fluoride/L.
