are recommended.

Product arising from burning: Products of combustion may include oxides of carbon and
sulfur and hydrogen chloride.

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: A self-contained breathing apparatus should be used.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Wear suitable skin, eye and respiratory protection (see
2.3.1). Isolate and evacuate area and collect spill by
careful sweeping or vacuuming. Transfer to a labelled,
double polythene bag for recovery or disposal by
incineration. Clean the contaminated area with water and
detergent.

Handling and storage

Handling: Small quantities should be handled in an enclosed system
e.g. fume cupboard. Gloves and a dust mask to BS 2091 should
be worn. Larger quantities should be handled in an enclosed,
mechanically ventilated, restricted area. Skin, eye and
respiratory protection (eg. an airfed plastic suit
manufactured to HSE certificate (A/170/89)), plastic or
rubber gloves (to BS1651) and knee-length rubber boots to
BS1870 should be worn.

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: The substance decomposes on contact with acids to give
highly flammable chlorobutanol.

Chemical reaction with water: None reported.

Dust explosion determined by test: N

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Uncontaminated material can be recovered by
recrystallisation from hot ethanol, filtration to 10 micron
and drying.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: Neutralisation is not recommended as the chemicals required
would increase the hazard.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not recommended.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: The substance should be disposed of by incineration; minimum
residence time 2 seconds at a temperature of 1000-1200 deg
C. Waste gas treatment to remove hydrogen chloride and
sulphur oxides should be fitted.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Not recommended

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: The substance will not enter the public domain
