The partition coefficient (n-octanol/ water), Pow, of 1-ETHYL-3-METHYL IMIDAZOLIUM ETHYLSULFATE could not be calculated due to the high water and n-octanol solubility.

The determination of the partition coefficient (n-octanol/water) of1-ETHYL-3-METHYL IMIDAZOLIUM ETHYLSULFATE was based on the following guidelines: OECD guidelines for testing of chemicals no.107: "Partition coefficient (n-octanol/water): Shake Flask Method", Adopted July 27,1995 and on EEC directive 92/69 EEC, Part A, Methods for the determination of physico-chemical properties, A.8: "Partition coefficient", EEC Publication no. L383, December 1992.

Since the test substance is a salt, both the flask-shaking method and the HPLC-method were not applicable. Because also calculation from the structural formula was not possible, the estimation method was used as the only possible alternative to determine the partition coefficient (n-octanol/water) of 1-ETHYL-3-METHYL IMIDAZOLIUM ETHYLSULFATE. The estimation method is recognised by the international guidelines (EEC, OECD) and estimates the partition coefficient from the quotient of the n-octanol solubility and the water solubility. The solubility of the test substance in n-octanol was determined in the present study. The solubility of the test substance in water was determined in NOTOX project 417206. The n-octanol solubility of 1-ETHYL-3-METHYL IMIDAZOLIUM ETHYLSULFATE at 20.0 ± 0.6 °C was determined to be > = 1015 g/L. The water solubility of 1-ETHYL-3-METHYL IMIDAZOLIUM ETHYLSULFATE at 20.1 ± 0.5 °C and pH 8.3 is > = 1000 g/L. The partition coefficient (n-octanol/ water), Pow, of 1-ETHYL-3-METHYL IMIDAZOLIUM ETHYLSULFATE could not be calculated due to the high water and n-octanol solubility.
