Additional information

Two experimental studies are available investigating the short-term toxicity of aminoiminomethanesulphinic acid (CAS No. 1758-73-2) to aquatic invertebrates. The key study was performed according to OECD 202 (GLP) with the water flea Daphnia magna (MOE, 1999). Nominal concentrations up to 300 mg/L were tested under semi-static conditions. Based on HPLC measurements the concentrations were measured to be > 80% of nominal only in the nominal concentrations of 150 and 300 mg/L. Therefore, the effect concentrations were based on the measured concentrations. After 48 h an EC50 of 80.7 mg/L based on measured concentrations (time weighted average) was calculated.
This result is supported by a second GLP study which was performed according to OECD 202 (adopted 1984; Bogers, 1988). The performance of the test is different to the current guideline since the study duration was only 24 h. After 24 h an EC50 of 390 mg/L (nominal) resulted which supports the result from the key study. Based on the available studies it can be concluded that aminoiminomethanesulphinic acid is of low acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates.
