Dispersion medium
Weigh 5 g of SPAN 80 into a conical flask and mix with 1 l of n-Heptane. Stir this solution for at
least 30 minutes at room temperature with a magnetic rod. Filter through a 0.45 µm MILLIPORE-filter.
Procedure:
Add appropriately 150 ml of the Dispersant into the dispersion unit and set the pump/stir speed to
approx. 3000 rpm. Align the laser beam and measure the background to determine the suitability of
the blank. Gradually transfer the sample into the dispersion unit using an approx. 5 mm large
spatula,
ensuring that the obscuration is in the 10% - 30% range. Allow the sample to equilibrate in the
dispersion unit and start the measurement after approximately 3 minutes stirring time.

Repeat the procedure two additional times for each sample tested. This means that for each sample
of material, measurements should be performed on at least three separate sample preparations.
Average and report the mean value of d(0.95).
