Based on the data summarised in this section, ethylbenzene is not considered as genotoxic toxicant.

However, because of impurities profile, the substance is classified as Mutagenicity - Genetic Toxicity: Muta. Cat. 2; R46 May cause heritable genetic damage, in accordance with Directive 67/548/EEC and Mutagen Category 1B; H340: May cause genetic defects, in accordance with the GHS criteria of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. Therefore, no additional testing of ethylbenzene for mutagenicity is required.
