Additional information

Ethylbenzene has harmonized at EU level classifications and it is classified as a highly flammable (F; R11/ Flam. Liq. 2) liquid substance. Therefore, no further testing for irritation properties is required for ethylbenzene.

From the data available for ethylbenzene, it is likely that liquid ethylbenzene or high concentrations of ethylbenzene vapour in the air may cause irritation of skin, and eye. Moreover, accidental skin and/or eye contact with liquid ethylbenzene may take place. However, this scenario could be relevant for occupational settings only.

In general, appropriate engineering controls and work practices to reduce employee exposure to the lowest level achievable must be in place with additional suitable skin, eye, face and respiratory protection in work areas and operations with high risks of exposure to ethylbenzene.

Appropriate skin, eye and face protection is a part of the Guidance on safe Use of ethylbenzene recommended here.
