Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Water soluble zirconium salts like zirconium(tetra)nitrate, zirconium(tetra)chloride, zirconium oxychloride and zirconium dioxide once in aqueous media dissociate very quickly under neutral conditions. (Daunderer, M.; Lehrbuch Klinische Toxikologie, 89. Erg. Lfg.; 11/94).

Zirconium nitrate, once in water, dissociates into nitric acid and zirconium dinitrate oxide, which undergoes instantaneous hydrolysis under neutral conditions forming hydrated forms of zirconium dioxide (the most stable form of zirconium in water). This is anticipated to be representative for environmental conditions. Therefore toxicity tests conducted with other soluble zirconium salts are suitable to characterise the effects of zirconium(tetra)nitrate. Tests with zirconium metal can be regarded as worst case scenario as dissociation of zirconium(tetra)nitrate will not lead to free zirconium metal in aqueous media.
