Additional information

The substance Nonylphenol ethoxylate sarcosine derivatives (CAS no 75627-31-5) is an amphoteric surfactant consisting of branched nonylphenol ethoxylate and sarcosinate.

In a prolonged ready biodegradation study with nonylphenol ethoxylate sarcosine derivatives according to OECD TG 301D (GLP, reliability 1) 5% degradation was found after 60 days. This degradation was attributed to the mineralization of the small amount of solvent (2-propanol) present in the test substance. Therefore it was concluded that the substance is not biodegraded in the Closed bottle test up to 60 days.

Sorption to soil and sewage sludge was experimentally determined with the HPLC method. Log Koc (soil) was determined as 2.5 + 0.1 at the environmentally relevant pH of 7.5. Log Koc (sewage sludge) was reported as 2.4 + 0.2 at the same pH.

Further testing of hydrolysis and simulation testing has been waived as the chemical safety assessment does not indicate the need to investigate these properties. A bioaccumulation study has been waived as direct and indirect exposure of the aquatic compartment is unlikely as demonstrated by the chemical safety assessment.

The substance is produced at one manufacturing site within the EU and is marketed outside the EU. As indicated in the exposure assessment emissions into the environment are avoided by adequate handling of any nonylphenol ethoxylate, sarcosine derivative containing waste water and off-vents. Emissions to water are minimized at the manufacturing site since all upcoming contaminated waste water is treated in the incinerator on site or by an external contractor. The potential emission to air via the ventilation system is considered to be low since the evacuated gases from the process are condensed before they are released to air. Pollution of soil is unlikely as the substance is handled on special contained areas. If spillage should occur, it is collected and handled as hazardous waste to be incinerated on site. The contaminated surface is thereafter cleaned with water and the polluted cleaning water is incinerated. Therefore, direct or indirect exposure of the environmental compartments is unlikely as there are no releases to air, water and soil. Therefore, it has been concluded that the chemical safety assessment does not indicate the need for further studies into the environmental fate of the substance.
