Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No adverse effects on algae growth is likely to occur from the addition of charcoal in water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No toxicity to algae and aquatic plants is expected to occur following the exposure to charcoal due to its physicochemical properties.

Charcoal is consider as very slightly soluble in water.

No data are available on the toxicity to algae and aquatic plants of charcoal produced by wood, probably due to its pure solubility in water.

However, there are some data available related to the effects on algae of its exposure to activated charcoal and black carbon.

In conclusion, considering the above mentioned results and the fact that charcoal is very slightly soluble in waterm, no adverse effects on algae growth is likely to occur from the addition of charcoal in water up to this concentration.
