Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
explosive properties of explosives
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties which include oxygen, but the calculated oxygen balance is less than - 200
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is an organic substance or mixture containing chemical groups associated with explosive properties, but the exothermic decomposition energy is less than 500 J/g and the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500°C
Justification for type of information:
JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
Based on its structure, is cannot be excluded that the substance has explosive properties.

According to the regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures, if a chemical contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties, a substance is not classified as explosive :
when the calculated oxygen balance is less than -200
when the exothermic composition energy is less than 500 J/g and the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500°C.

OXYGEN BALANCE:

OB = - 1600 * (2x + (y/2) -z)/MW

where:
x = 35
y = 36
z = 3
MW = 620

Therefore, the OB of Sepisol Fast Yellow MG-F = - 219 < to the cut-off limit value of 200.

EXOTHERMIC COMPOSITION!:

The thermal stability study performed on the substance gives an exothermic peak with an energy of 204 - 210 kJ/kg at 240-258°C < to the cut-off value of 500 J/g.

CONCLUSION
With an oxygen balance < 200 and an exothermic decomposition < 500 J/g at 240 -258°C, the test item does not meet the criteria for classification as explosive.
