In two studies according to OECD Guideline 301 B (CO2 Evolution Test, Thiébaud 1994) and 301 D (Closed Bottle Test, Thiébaud & Moncel 1998) there was no observed biodegradation of N-tallow alkyl derivates of 1,1'-[[3-[(3-aminopropyl)amino]propyl]imino]bis-2-Propanol. While the test item concentration of 20.5 mg/L was clearly toxic to the non-adapted activated sludge micro-organisms, the concentration of 2.15 mg/L used in the CO2 Evolution test may have exhibited some inhibition as well. In the toxicity control flasks, containing both the reference item and the test article, the percentage biodegradation reached 28 % after 14 days (validity criterion). Nonetheless this value indicates that the test item was not significantly inhibitory for the inoculum until this time as it is higher than 25%, the final value at day 28 should have reached 40 to 50%. In fact it there was stagnation and 24% biodegradation was measured at day 28. In conclusion it can not be excluded that the submission UVCB is biodegradable to some extent. But it seems unlikely that in different experimental settings employing lower concentrations the criteria of readily biodegradation can be reached.
