Description of key information

The key study is a 72-hour exposure using Desmodesmus subspicatus which was used to determine EL50s and NOELRs.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L

Additional information

The no observed effect concentration for growth inhibition (NOErLR) was 100 mg/l. At 72 hours, the median effect loading rate with respect to growth inhibition (ErLR50) of Reaction Product of 1-chloro-2,3-epoxypropane, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and water to Desmodesmus subspicatus was estimated to be >100 mg/l.

In a supporting study, the effect of glycerin exposure over an 8 day exposure period was examined with Scenedesmus quadricauda and Microcystis aeruginosa. Diffferences in turbidity were measured after 8 days and values greater than 3% (EC3) were considered significant. The EC3 was >10,000 mg/L and 2,900 mg/L for S. quadricauda and M. aeruginosa.
