Description of key information

The results of a Differential Scanning Calorimetry and a Koenen experiment are in good agreement and both indicate that any hazards due to self-heating, self-ignition, detonation or explosive properties can be ruled out.

Three samples of different batches of the reaction mass of calcium carbonate and calcium dihydroxide and calcium peroxide were tested in a Differential Scanning Calorimetry and a Koenen experiment in order to determine the explosive properties of the test substance.

DSC:

Up to the final temperature of the DSC measurement the total heat of decomposition of all tested calcium peroxide batches as tested is less than 500 J/g. The onset of decomposition is significantly below 500°C.

Koenen:

The test samples show no effects of explosion at a limiting diameter of 1 mm according to Koenen test.

Based on the findings in both the DSC and the Koenen test, any hazards due to self-heating, self-ignition, detonation or explosive properties of the reaction mass of calcium carbonate and calcium dihydroxide and calcium peroxide have to be ruled out.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available test results show that the test substance does not have any self-heating, self-ignition, detonation or explosive properties. As a consequence, in accordance with the criteria described in Regulation EC 1272/2008 (CLP), classifcation for explosivity is not required.
