Charcoal occurs naturally in soil at sites of wild-fires and has no long-term adverse effect in the environment. Burning and incorporating burnt residues into soil is seen as a way to boost fertility in low-tech agricultural systems. It is not expected for charcoal to be toxic to creatures in the soil or to those who graze on the land.

It is not toxic to birds by virtue of the fact that during use it will be convrted to carbon dioxide which is itself found as a constituent of air.
