A screening test was performed to assess the ready biodegradability of the reaction mass isobutyl acid phosphate under aerobic conditions. The method was designed to be compatible with the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals (1992) No 301D, "Ready Biodegradability; Closed Bottle Test” referenced as Method C.4-E of Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, and US EPA Fate, Transport, and Transformation Test Guidelines OPPTS 835.3110 Paragraph (o).

The test item, at a concentration of 2.0 mg/L, was exposed to sewage treatment micro-organisms with mineral medium in sealed culture vessels in the dark at temperatures of 19.9 to 21.1°C for 28 days.

The degradation of the test item was assessed by the determination of the amount of oxygen consumed. Control solutions with inoculum and the reference item, sodium benzoate, together with a toxicity control were used for validation purposes.

The test item attained 0% degradation after 28 days and the validity criterion were fulfilled. Therefore the reaction mass cannot be considered as biodegradable under the strict terms and conditions of the OECD Guideline 301D.
