Description of key information

Sodium ethanolate hydrolsyses in water to form inorganic sodium hydroxide and ethanol. Whereas inorganic substances cannot biodegrade, ethanol was readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Sodium ethanolate hydrolsyses in water to form inorganic sodium hydroxide and ethanol.

The biodegradability of ethanol was studied in an OECD Guideline 301 C test (Ready Biodegradability: Modified MITI Test (I)). After 14 days of exposure a biodegradation of 89% were observed. The test substance is regarded as readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.
