Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The substance reacts violently with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In contact with water sodium and potassium ethanolate react very rapidly, quantitatively and exothermically to ethanol and the corresponding alkali hydroxides. X+ -O-C2H5 + H2O ---> C2H5OH + OH- + X+ (with X= Na+ or K+). Due to the very high pKa-value of ethanol of 15.9 at 25 °C, the equilibrium is on the side of the reaction products under environmentally relevant conditions. The reaction products, alkali metal ions and ethanol are stable in water while hydroxide ions can be subject to neutralization reactions in natural water bodies, depending on the buffer capacity of the carbonate/bicarbonate buffer systems.
