Description of key information

C16-22-(even numbered)alkylamines (CAS no 68037-92-3), which is solid at room temperature was dissolved in ethanol. Water was added and pH was determined to 11.5 in a 5 w/w-% solution of the test substance in water/ethanol (50:50). Based on the high pH and according to CLP the C16-22-(even numbered)alkylamines (CAS no 68037-92-3) is classified as skin corrosive Category 1 and to cause serious eye damage Category 1.

Additional information

As the pH of C16-22-(even numbered)alkylamines (CAS no 68037-92-3) is determined to be 11.5 the substance is considered to be corrosive to skin and cause serious eye damage in accordance to the CLP legislation.

Justification for selection of skin irritation / corrosion endpoint:
According to the REACH legislation Annex VII, a skin irritation or corrosion study does not need to be conducted on the substance if the criteria are met for classification as corrosive to the skin or irritating to eyes. As described in IUCLID section 4.20, the pH of C16-22-(even numbered)alkylamines (CAS no 68037-92-3) is determined to 11.5 in a 5 w/w-% solution of the test substance in water/ethanol (50:50) and according to the CLP legislation the substance is classified as corrosive to skin based on the high pH. No skin irritation or corrosion study is therefore performed.

Justification for selection of eye irritation endpoint:
According to the REACH legislation Annex VIII, an in vivo eye irritation study does not need to be conducted if the substance has a pH ≥ 11.5. As described in IUCLID section 4.20, the pH of C16-22-(even numbered)alkylamines (CAS no 68037-92-3) is determined to 11.5 in a 5 w/w-% solution of the test substance in water/ethanol (50:50). No eye irritation study is therefore performed.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the CLP legislation, the substance C16-22-(even numbered)alkylamines (CAS no 68037-92-3) is considered to be skin corrosive Category 1 and to cause serious eye damage Category 1, based on the high pH value.
